Around the Bend

I am Ben Walls--the voice of the blog over that last 12 - 13 months. As of today, my term as Social Media Chair/general-purpose Secretary for the guild has ended, but I say this with grateful energy. A lot has been accomplished in my brief tenure, and more shall come in the following years. This organization thrives on the youth in its core, and for that I wish the most vibrant of futures. If anything I accomplished may have a most virulent effect on our guild--I hope it is my persistance to organization and the preservation of our short but exciting history. For the future, I have no set boundaries; however, I do plan on higher education in a near future--but enough about me.

Heather Thurman will be taking over my position, so I leave to her keys to a magnificent garden. To those whom work with her, I hope you will be as accepting of her proceedures as you all have been with my undertakings. I say this with love and passion for this group: Flourish and be merry, there is not much else we can love other than the ecstacy of good writing and great friendship--so enjoy it.

It was not a duty to serve, it was my greatest pleasure. Do not lose the vigor we all share today as it will be the foundation of a prospoerious furutre. Best of luck on your future endeavors. And Heather, the blog is yours now; treat well it and it shall be your greatest ally. Live long and prosper.

- Benjamin Michael Walls (the Other)

Elections

The Writer's Guild hereby acknowledges our executive board for next the 2015-16 academic year. Votes were tallied by a general election, and the winning candiates are as follows:

President (incumbent): Brian Keefe
Vice President (incumbent): Megan Esterkamp
Treasurer: Julie Simmons
Secretary: Heather Thurman

We congratulate them on their new and continued devotions to the guild, pathing way for a long and illustrious future. And to these winners, we all salute your willingness to take on these roles. Without your dedication, the guild would crumple; thus, we are fortunate to have such frends and colleagues.

Winter's Musings

Another meeting was cancelled last week due to an industry term we've since become familiar with: "inclimate weather." During the last mini-episode of snowfall and subsequent closures, the Guild spent a few hours at the Panera Bread, sharing in a fun afternoon and swapping stories just to pass the dull, whitening day. Here's a small product of our efforts.

NaNoWriMo

This month is November, and apart from the cool mustaches cropping up around the country, it is also the time when novels crop up around the nation. We at the guild are sponsoring a series of weekend write-ins to provide good fellowship during the NaNoWriMo season (the National Novel Writing Month, previously abbreviated).

During these write-ins, the guild shares the fun and hardship of dredging through a new novel--all from scratch--and the enjoyment of creating a new project with the hopes of seeing it to fruition. About 1/3 through the the month and the those writing days are coming in at full swing.

We're happy to see everyone working towards a common goal, and in that, it seems the first third has gone off without any proverbial hitch or ditch in the side of the road. 9 down--just 21 to go!

Horror Day 2014

Like all writers, there comes a time to bare oneself for the public space.
Halloween did not go past the eye of the guild as we celebrated the harvest festivities, which may or not contain paragraphs about the spookiness of Maine. In swift detail we took task under the guise of the shadows, and the ghouls, and delightful macabre of this fateful time of year.
The fun bleed from our pens as the festivities (including candy)
went for merry time. As we push to the end of another term, we hope this ghastly day inspires a dread (metaphorically) down your spine. If you missed out--no worries--there's always room for another chair in chamber of horror (mwa ha ha ha).

Behold, tis a monster mash!

First Meeting of the Year

Let out a heavy sigh in memory of another summer passed, and the liberty of vacations blown to the winds, but that also means the guild has returned.

This Wednesday welcomed back a returning core of thrilled writers, while ushering in several new members to keep the guild going strong for years to come. A caption could explore this scene in depth; instead, how about we let our writers speak for themselves.

Now, let's christen another day and move towards an enriching and successful year--don't forget your pen!

Welcome Week 2014

Well writers, it's always good to get back to the run of things with another good break coming to an end. Today was a great time for the guild as we set up our booth for Welcome Week: a chance for clubs at UC to introduce themselves to the incoming class of freshmen--as well as an opportunity for the guild to reach out to returning students that might have missed out on our activities last year.

So, it was also pretty hot today:

Well said Brian... we had a ball though meeting and greeting students interested in the club. The heat may have had a strong hand in today's event, but we stuck through it with the same zeal of weekly meetings. A few marker mishaps, and a couple dozen cookies later, our day in the sun winded down as pleasantly as any summer afternoon could. We look forward to seeing everyone again this Wednesday.

The treats were flying off the shelf:     only a few crumbs were left--they even took the last can of
Who-hash! Then, Other Ben got comfortable... maybe too comfortable.
